Jane Kelly
“I work mainly in sculpture, particularly with materials that involve interesting or unique hand feelings– things that involve squishing, smearing, scraping, stroking, or striking. If you can describe it with a tactile adjective, I’d probably like to work with it. The actions themselves become work in their own way, too; the process of touching and making has a life of its own, and performative work can be a method of presenting that life. Possibly because I find myself reaching out (or through a screen) to try to touch or feel almost every sculpture I come across, I try to embed invitation in the things I make. I hope people will choose to enter the space and make contact with my work, literally or figuratively.”
