Ana Liu

My thesis work depicts a narrative controlled by light and darkness. I incorporate formal devices from comics, American suburbia, and Biblical imagery to experiment with frames, POVs, and the shapes of bodies. In my work, symbols and sites of light populate the darkness and operate as portals and guardians. Symbols of evil, such as the serpent, are not the foil of the light. They are plaintive, not malicious. My goal is to draw out affect and experience. I want to tap into old feelings of isolation, humiliation, and empathy.
